June M. has a wicked sense of humor – her witty remarks take you by surprise, and she’s full of them. Her colleagues at the Longmont Public Library, where she has volunteered once a week for more than two decades, have come to appreciate June’s upbeat repartee, as have the Via drivers who have picked her up and dropped her off at the library during those many years.
And that is one of the things June likes best about Via: “You pay attention to me; you listen to what I have to say,” she said. “I know when I have a conversation with a driver or call to schedule a ride or even make a complaint that what I say is taken seriously.”
June has relied on Via’s paratransit service for nearly 25 years — since she had a stroke at the age of 38 while in recovery from surgery. After the stroke, the doctors told her she was lucky to be alive; she says she had a strong will then and still does today. The stroke left her with physical limitations, but they have not limited her life. She doesn’t think of herself as “handicapped” because she enjoys and appreciates the life she has.
June learned about Via (then Special Transit) before leaving the hospital and has been a regular ever since. She uses the paratransit service for shopping, visits to her mother and her volunteer job at the library.
