The Boulder Public Library will host “Portraits of Ability: Stories of Independence and Inspiration” March 2 through mid-June. The exhibit is located at the main branch on the Arapahoe Ramp, south of Seeds Cafe, at 1001 Arapahoe Ave, Boulder, CO, 80301.
This exhibit features 15 “portrait-stories” of people Via serves, including unique images and narratives which share a common theme – that of striving not to be defined by disability or age. The spirit and rich sense of who each person is – beyond their mobility challenges – is captured in photo-portraits taken by New York portrait artist Sophie Klafter.
The narratives that accompany each portrait can be found in the “Portraits of Ability: 25 Stories of Independence and Inspiration” book on the shelves near the exhibit, or you can read these narratives below.
A full version of the “Portraits of Ability” exhibit, including ten additional portraits by Rachel Gomez and others, is housed at Via’s Headquarters in Boulder, CO. This exhibition is open year-round to the public during Via’s normal business hours, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
This exhibit was co-sponsored and curated by the VSA Colorado/Access Gallery (VSA), a non-profit organization dedicated to creating economic and educational opportunities for people with disabilities through art. Access Gallery, located in the Santa Fe Art District in Denver, CO, is a nonprofit gallery focusing on promoting the creative power in people with disabilities.
This free exhibit is open to the public during library hours, now through mid-June.
